Death Duel with the Destroyers The Island of Doctor Apocalypse Villains and Vigilantes Collector Checklist |
Basically, at the end of the previous scenario, the player heroes discover the location of Dr. Apocalypse's hideout on Nacht Island. Their job in The Island of Doctor Apocalypse is to invade the island, defeat Dr. Apocalypse, and prevent him from using his satellite to destroy cities while blackmailing the USA. Unfortunately, this scenario includes no supervillains besides Dr. Apocalypse, and while his name is cool, the character himself is kinda dull. The plotline for The Island of Doctor Apocalypse is very open ended, and consists mostly of a map of the island and a couple of the locations on the island, including Doctor Apocalypse's villa. One thing that this scenario and the other 2 scenarios before it demonstrate is the infancy of superhero rpg's. Later scenarios for Villains and Vigilantes and other superhero roleplaying games get more and more creative, but these initial scenarios were little more than superpowered dungeon crawls.
Doctor Apocalypse was, to me, one of the more boring supervillains in roleplaying. He's basically been given any and all superpowers from the Villains and Vigilantes rulesbook, which is meant to make him interesting and dangerous. But instead, he's just kinda dull. The only other baddies to fight on the island are henchmen and 10 foot tall robots. And the problem with having superheroes fighting henchmen and robots is that it's boring if they win too easily, and if they lose, they get mad because they think henchmen and robots should be easier to fight than this. The Island of Dr. Apocalypse isn't a bad scenario, but compared to its 2 predecessors, it's a little bit disappointing. |
